How a Late Night Chat with AI Turned Into Two New Product Listings

Let me be honest with you — I was skeptical about AI. Like, really skeptical. I'm a maker. I create things with my hands, my heart, and a whole lot of love from Nana HQ. What could a computer possibly understand about that?

Then one night, I was scrolling through my photos and stumbled across pictures of the hand-lettered Christmas stockings I had made. You know — the ones I made on a custom order for a local customer.  I was proud of my work and wanted to show them to someone so I just showed the pictures to Sidekick, Shopify's AI assistant, mostly just to share what I'd been working on.

And that's when things got interesting.

Within minutes, Sidekick looked at my stockings and said — These are gorgeous! You could sell personalized name stockings AND offer custom home decor lettering and signs as a separate listing.

Two product listings. From one conversation. From photos I almost didn't even share.

I hadn't even thought of it that way! To me, they were just stockings. To Sidekick, they were a personalized keepsake product and a custom home decor and signage business waiting to happen.

So we built both listings together — right then and there, late at night, in my PJs.

Here's what I learned:

AI doesn't replace your creativity — it reflects it back to you. Sidekick didn't create anything. I made those stockings. I did the lettering. AI just helped me see the business value in what I was already doing.

Sometimes you're too close to your own work to see it clearly. As makers, we often give away or undervalue the things we create out of love. Having an outside perspective — even an AI one — can open your eyes to opportunities you're sitting right on top of.

It's a collaboration, not a takeover. Every word, every product, every design at Creative Things By Gen LLC comes from me. Sidekick just helps me organize, list, describe, and launch faster so I can spend more time actually making.
